Study Abroad: What You Should Know About

You’ve probably heard this before: study abroad is a life-changing experience. Study abroad is a BIG move and before you make your decision, have you ever ask: What should you know about before you STUDY ABROAD? There are just so many things to think about and plan before you could make a call about studying abroad. Here’s some guidelines for you to be mindful of and to begin with. Always keep these in mind: Each country has an education system of their own, i.e.: US and Canadian’s education is more flexible in terms of choosing major(s), UK has optional 1-year internship for some programs, and studying 3 year of Bachelor degree will get you a basic degree, not an Honours in Australia etc. Curriculum and instruction method differs between countries too. Make sure you have done enough research before you choose where to study in. Always think steps ahead and make plans according to your goal. No one wants to invest so much time, energy and money; just to find out the planned path doesn’t lead to what you want to be years later. For example, if you want to be a Veterinary Doctor, make sure the program that you will be studying is accredited by the relevant board for registration later on! All universities have their application timeline and deadlines, some deadlines can be a year ahead of their intake! Prestigious universities like Harvard, MIT and Stanford have Early Action Deadlines on Nov 1st for the following Fall(August) intake; and most professional programs like Medicine and Veterinary Science have several strict deadlines to comply with: date for admission test application, program application, documents submission and etcetera. Make sure you are aware of these deadlines and do not miss them.  Budget will be one of the crucial elements in your study abroad plan. University tuition fee could range from MYR 40,000 – MYR 150,000 per year. Aside from tuition fee, you should put fees for housing and living expenses as well as those “insignificant expenses” onto the table too. For those that think miscellaneous expenses like hair cut, evening gathering, university club membership fee, travelling and more and more are of small amount that should not be taken seriously, you are wrong! All possible expenses should be discussed and well-prepared beforehand.  You are in luck because you do not have to fight alone!
